Talking About……Plastic Bags!

Hi Steph,
My friend found me the only “flight” pack in NZ! It is awesome. He is so sweet.:)
I can’t wait till I get all my kit and go back to the mountain.
I had a discussion with my friend (Marty) last night about how to protect our feet from getting cold if we have to bivy. I heard some people wear a plastic bag in extreme condition as a layer during the day when they climb. I mean they wear a liner socks, plastic bag and mountain socks to keep the inside booties dry. Do you have any suggestion?
Thanks heaps,
Shiva

P.S. I am still investigating to find the sleeping bag your friend Iris suggested in New Zealand. It sound they haven’t introduced this product to New Zealand yet.

Dear Shiva,
I have tried the plastic bag layer a couple of times, because it always SOUNDS like a really good idea in theory. But somehow it never really does much for me, and just seems to cause extra hassle and futzing. My experience has been that boots are always going to get a little damp (or wet, in the worst case) on a climb. I do always carry an extra pair of socks and light gloves in my pack in a waterproof bag, to switch out in case things get really wet.
And to answer your question, about how to keep your feet warm during bivies….I wish I knew! I always end up sitting there, diligently wiggling my toes inside my boots all night, waiting for morning 🙂
I’d be curious to hear what others think about the plastic bag plan, because like I said, it always SOUNDS Like a really good idea!
xx Steph
