Style

Hi Steph, I’m a girl from italy who started climbing a year ago.
I really enjoy climbing, and one of my dreams is to improve my style, so I decided to write your a letter: maybe you could give me some advices, maybe just some words..I do not know!…
Now I’m able to climb in 6a degrees walls, and I’d love to climb 7a for the end of this summer..so, what shall I do? (i’m 17, more or less 1.60 tall & 40kg is my weight!)..
thank’s martina

Hi Martina!
Thanks for writing to me! In fact, I am on my way to Italy today, for the Cortina inCroda festival 🙂

One way to improve your style is to pay attention when other people are climbing. If you climb a lot at the same area, watch how other people do moves on climbs you know….usually you will notice that most people do things a different way on the same route. Try the same climb many times, intentionally using different sequences, and experiment with doing things differently. Working harder routes can help you with this too. If at first you can’t do a move, you will try it many different ways until you find the best way to position yourself to get the next holds. Pay attention to where your waist and hips are when you are trying moves, more than your hands….this will get you thinking about your body position in a different way.

When you have just started to climb, you are building a repertoire of movement, and the more different things you try, the more you will add to that.
I hope you are having a good summer of climbing!
Steph
