School of Rocks

Dear Steph,
Just wanted to drop a quick note to say what a true inspiration you are. In high school I went out every summer to rockclimb in Colorado and loved it. I am also a musician and have chosen to focus on the music for the last ten years but I am ready to get back into the climbing. I want to spend a few weeks this summer out West rockclimbing and maybe do some base jumping. Do you have suggestions for one of the best “schools” for this out in Colorado or near where you are? Could you recommend the best teachers out there now?
Many thanks,
Ted

Hi Ted,
Thanks for writing! I used to live in Estes Park, Colorado and the guide school was very good there. Until now there has been no way to try base jumping without learning to skydive first and fully committing to the sport: however my husband Mario and I are starting a business in Moab this year to offer tandem base jumps. Mario has a customized base rig, similar to what they use for skydiving tandem jumps, which allows him to take a person along on a cliff base jump. So now anyone can experience a base jump in this way, though you have to be fairly fit to hike to the top of the cliffs. I did a jump with him from a bridge, and I have to say it was one of the most fun experiences ever! So keep an eye on my site, because you’ll hear more about it in the next year.
🙂 Steph
