Moab in March

Hi Steph,
My name is Brian and I am planning on making a trip out to Moab this spring for some camping and climbing. I was wondering what you thought the weather should be like in March. Is it usually warm or cold? Is there still snow? I’m from Ohio where the weather is basically unpredictable in March, so I was curious. I read on some online sites and almanacs that it is usually pretty nice out there, well at least for my Ohioan tastes just out of winter. I was also wondering if you could recommend any good places to backcountry camp and some good places to go for climbing and hiking and what not. I will be looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you,
Brian

Hi Brian,
I really like March in Moab, because it’s not too hot. But March is like November–unpredictable. It can be sunny and perfect, or it be pretty cold and can even snow. I think it’s definitely worth it, because when it’s good it’s good.

For camping, they have shut off a lot of the Kane Creek spots, but if you are willing to walk for a bit you won’t have any trouble. In March you will not be dealing with too many crowds, and you will have your pick of any camping you want, even the off-the-road car camping spots. Mineral Canyon is really nice, and very beautiful and quiet anywhere you want to camp. You will probably want to climb in the sun, so try going to Potash Road in the morning and Abraxas Wall in the afternoon. Indian Creek is mainly south facing, so March is a very good time there also. Make sure to check out Corona Arch–a very nice, short hike to a really nice arch and it’s not in the National Park.
🙂 Steph
