Greetings From Krasnoyarsk
Hello Steph. My name is Kate and I live in Russia, in Krasnoyarsk city. I am studying English with my tutor and we are using a textbook. There was an article about deadly extreme sports and I read about famous wingsuit flyers. And in the end of this article was your quote: “Perhaps getting better means becoming more elegant”. You can see it on the photo I sent you. I have no questions because I am not a risk-taker, but I just wish you luck and please be careful)) You are such a great person))
Best regards, Kate
Hi Kate,
Thanks for writing to me, and for this interesting shot of your textbook–I’m very curious what the book is and it seems like a fun way to study English! And yes, the quote for me is definitely spot on. I think there’s a balance between pushing adventure and pushing ability–too much on one side or the other upsets the balance. And with wingsuit flying in particular, progression is something to really consider, as far as what it means. If progression means flying closer and closer to the ground (which is sometimes how wingsuiters imagine the meaning of progression and being “the best”), then there is a hard limit, which is when you actually get close enough to hit the ground, and that’s not how I see progression–progression to me means the possibilities should be without limit. And that’s why I see a balance between adventure and technical skill or style. I see climbing this way too, especially now where there are so many different types of climbing that people pursue, and sometimes focus on to the exclusion of all else.
Best of luck with your studies,
Steph
