Hi Steph,
If you’re really reading this, then thank you! I am so impressed with your fantastic abilities, career and the life you’ve created!!! Congrats!
Now for my question:
I attended the University of Maryland from 2000-2004 and I heard a rumor that you had attended UMD, and had even soloed the corner of Denton (one of the high-rise freshman dorms). Is there any truth to this?
Also, if you attended UMD, where did you climb locally?
thanks!!!!

Dear Chris,
Yes, the rumors are all true! I mean, the ones about U of Md 🙂
I lived in Denton dorm during my freshman year, and did climb up the corner. I spent my freshman year at U of Md, and that’s when I started climbing, at Carderock and also Great Falls. I did a student exchange to Colorado State University in Fort Collins for my sophomore year. It was hard for me to go back to Maryland, with less climbing options, after that experience. So I geeked out, and finished my last two years at Maryland in two semesters….which allowed me to go straight back to CSU for a Master’s program.
So if you climb at Carderock, think about me doing my very first climb ever there! I was so lucky to have such a friendly place to learn, and have fond memories of being taught how to use my feet, how to tie knots, belay, etc., by the local climbers.
Take care!
xx Steph
