Training in the Gym
hi Steph
my name is raoul and i live in italy.
I red your book and i discovered that you went in a fitness gym for your training.I do the same to improve my condition but without sense or better without a training program.
I would like to know your training program (type of exercises and wicht kind of muscle you train) and i would like to receive some ideas in base at your experience.
I know, i ask to you a lot of informations and for sure your level is not like mine but in any case i want to try.
If you want to suggest me any books or something like this please do it because here in italy is not so simple find something good.
thank you very much for your book (great lesson of live) and i hope to meet you one day.
take care
raoul.
Ciao Raoul!
I have written about the way I lift weights in an earlier post in case you want to check it out, and I am glad to get your letter because I just started into the gym again for this year, today!
I tend to lift weights for a few months in the winter season. I really enjoy the routine, and the upper body gains I get by lifting weights, and I think it’s good to mix things up. I don’t do anything in the weight room for my legs, because I am always hiking and running anyway.
I tend to follow my instincts in the weight room, like I do with everything. So I pick exercises that seem to be directly climbing oriented (like lat pulls and rows, for example), and then I try to pick exercises that are climbing opposite (chest presses). Core strength is always important, so I do a lot of abdominal things at the end of my workouts.
I know some people bulk up by lifting weights, which is obviously not the best for climbing. But I think weight lifting is a great off-season, cross training activity. It’s also great for your mood and your bones 🙂
Read a few books or articles about general weight lifting methods, and then just go into the weight room and start experimenting. Think about climbing, and about where your weaknesses are physically when you are on the rocks, and you will soon find a series of exercises to address those weaknesses. Getting stronger never hurt anybody 😉
