Small Climbing Pack

Hi Steph,
I thought I would see if you have a recommendation for a small (12 liter would be great, 10 would work) pack that can be worn while climbing. I am frustrated looking for one because packs of that size are usually unisex and don’t fit me well. I want to use the pack mainly for soloing when I want to take my shoes to the top of the cliff so I can walk off. Also for long routes for water, snacks, etc.. I am close to 5’5″ tall and about 107 pounds so pretty small framed and skinny, which is the crux of the problem. I think that in order for a pack not to be distracting while soloing it should fit really well and not get in the way!

Do you use a small pack in this sort of way? If so, what have you found to be of good design and fit well? I am in the process of returning the Mammut Neon which is a sweet little pack but with a fit that is too large for me.

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter!
Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Have you checked out the Mammut Lithium Speed? There’s an 8 liter and a 15 liter option–I’m thinking you’ll want the smaller one.

That being said, I also very much recommend getting a pair of Evolv Cruzers for this sort of climbing. They’re not a beefy hiking boot that you’ll want to wear when carrying a haulbag up a talus field…but when you’re carrying your shoes on a fast and light free climb, it’s well worth sacrificing a little bit of hiking support for the approach and descent. I usually wear them with thin socks, and I clip them to a toy biner and hang them off a back gearloop with the socks stuffed inside. If you get the 8 liter Lithium Speed pack, you can easily stash the Cruzers in there and still save yourself plenty of room in the pack for a jacket, bars, water and more…
Enjoy!
Steph
