Shoes and More Shoes….
Hi Steph,
I’m sure your tired of asking gear questions? You said you size all your shoes half size down accept long all day easier, in which you size the same size as your street shoe. My only question to you is the use and sizing of moccasyns for crack climbing. I assume you want your toes flat for crack climbing so do size them half size down and let them stretch or do you immediately size them to your street shoe size to insure your toes are flat? Or am I wrong all together? Sorry to bother you with these questions but I live in Maryland and there are not many experts to ask. Also, just out of curiosity, what does “epicing” mean from your book. Thank you so much for your time.
Will
P.S.,I Love your book, really inspiring. I also see that your a very thorough responder to e-mails. Please don’t feel the need to write me a long e-mail, I know you have more pressing matters.
Hi Steph,
I love your site and videos of you climbing. It’s inspiring seeing you on those big slabs and talking about being out in the wilderness. A little bit beyond me at the moment and I don’t think my girlfriend would be too happy with me risking life and limb; she’s not even very comfortable with the idea of me bouldering outdoors which I’ll be doing at Fointainebleau in the summer. I’m really emailing to ask about which approach shoes you wear. I saw you mention them in one of your posts about crack shoes. I’m about to start my new life as a part time indoor climbing instructor (full time and outdoors in the not too distant future hopefully) and want something for my feet which I can wear all day but also get on the wall in a bit to teach the kids stuff and have fun in between classes. I’ve talked with another instructor who was wearing 5.10 Guide Tennies which seemed to be great for the purpose but I think they’re real leather. Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated.
All the best,
Jamie
Hi Will and Jamie,
See, I never get tired of talking about shoes….ever 🙂
Guide Tennies are perfect for everything/easy climbing. I have GREAT NEWS!!!! Five Ten has a pair of canvas Guide Tennies for next season! They are leather free, and super nice. So we are in there, you will just have to wait a few months for those.
Will, epic-ing is what happens when things are going b.a.d. Like when you can’t decide what size shoes to get! 😉
I have narrow feet, so my Moccasyms for crack climbing are a half size smaller than hiking shoe. If I had regular to wide feet, I’d get them exactly the same size as hiking shoes. And they do stretch.
🙂 Steph
