Moab Wedding?

Hey Steph,
I know that you’re a Moab local and was wondering if you could give me some insight into some beautiful places that are easy to access in the area?
I’m getting married in October, in Moab, but have no clue where, specifically.
We’re having a really small, simple wedding with about 10 people, our older parents (that don’t hike) and young daughter (that does), included.
We make it down to Moab often enough, but don’t really hike or camp far from climbing areas.
We’re planning on heading down sometime in the next couple of weeks to look around. I was wondering if, being a local, you could perhaps give me some leads on places to have our ceremony?

Hi Heather,
Moab in October is great for a wedding. It always seems to come down to access and bathrooms (when does it not seem to come down to bathrooms???) with outdoor weddings. I think a great view is key too. Most people who do a Moab outdoor wedding have the ceremony somewhere outdoors and then plan to have a meal or reception in town. If you can get a booking at the Desert Bistro, it’s probably the nicest restaurant in Moab. Karl and Michelle, the owners, are climbers. And Tatyana (pictured here at her wedding) works there. Buck’s Grillhouse (though it doesn’t sound promising from the name) would be my other choice, if you can reserve the lounge room area. They have a beautiful patio area, but it would probably be too chilly in October, and the lounge is really nice too, though I’m not crazy about the ambience of the main dining room area.

My friends Mick and Tatyana (thanks for the amazing photography from Chris Hunter who also shoots all the photos at my Indian Creek Clinics!) had their ceremony at the Moab golf course outdoors with a reception at the Desert Bistro and then got up at 4 in the morning the following day to take these photos at Mesa Arch.

The first spot that sprang to mind is Dead Horse Point State Park. It has some of the most beautiful views in this area, easy hiking access to them and there are bathrooms 🙂 Megan Blackwelder is the park manager (her number is in that link) and she would help you with any permitting that may be needed.

While you are driving to Dead Horse to check it out, keep in mind that there are numerous beautiful spots all along Highway 313 that takes you to Dead Horse Point. You would not need a permit to be at any of those spots, and there are bathrooms at the viewpoint for Monitor and Merrimac. So if you found a place you liked anywhere along that road, it would be logistically super easy. I know a few local people who have had ceremonies at spots they liked along that road.

Another beautiful place you might want to check out is Sand Flats Road, where the Slickrock Trail starts. There are many many beautiful spots, some bathrooms around, easy access, and it’s very close to Moab.
