Hi Steph,
it’s kind of a funny feeling I must say – no more than a year ago, I saw you for the first time in Masters of Stone and was thrilled by your solo climbs in Indian Creek. Then, I read some articles and have watched several movies about climbing in Yosemite and people like you, Dean, Ron Kauk or Lynn Hill – doing all that amazing things. And I was enchanted by the place (not only Yosemite I mean) and a great atmosphere. I just knew, it’s was not about doing the hardest climb ever etc. – it was a pure passion… and still is, I’m sure! Then, I’ve discovered this website two days ago and thought it’s a great opportunity to write a few words. I think meeting people that are passionate in their lives is really inspiring and can give a lot of positive energy – especially in ‘hard moments’…
It reminded me what Leonard Coyne once said about rock climbing: “You either got the spirit or you don’t. If you got the fu***g spirit you rock. And if you don’t… you’re a sport climber.” – well, I’m not that extreme in my opinions ;-), but there is a spirit in climbing and that’s what is all about for me.. definately.
Anyway, I wanted to say that I’m really impressed by your achievements in climbing and I really like your positive attitude to life. I also think that the website (and blog) is a very good idea – it’s nice and interesting to read. Hope you’ll post some pictures/movies from climbing trips soon.
Ok, wish you all the best, take care,
Robert
p.s. – as for inspiration – ‘Struggle is part of life, and once we accept that, things will be much easier’ – it’s still one of my favourite sentences, thanks!
Dear Robert,
Thanks so much for your sweet email, and it’s so nice to hear from you! I really hope you will get out to Yosemite soon, and get to experience the El Cap granite. I promise to write some climbing stories soon……it’s just that climbing is only one part of life, so a lot of other things capture my attention!
Well, I am sitting here in Yosemite with Dean (and Fletch!), and we are sending you dreams of granite and Camp 4 parties………
all the best,
Steph
