BASEline

Ever since the NY Times reporter (a very nice writer named Jere) came to visit last week, with Pete Mortimer and Nick Rosen (Senders Film makers extraordinaire), people seem very interested in Dean’s new BASEline project.
Of course, Jim Hurst and Brad Lynch are always faithfully filming, as they have been from the get-go, for their own film with Dean, Aerialist.
Through hell and highwater, Jim and Brad have been there, shooting, rigging and having fun…..even through the hysterical wacky hoopla that ensued after Dean free soloed Delicate Arch. In fact, Brad was Dean’s best man when we got married (along with Rick Cashner), and Jim married us! Talk about multi-talented. We are lucky to have such wonderful, adventurous friends.
Dean’s BASEline plan is a very good idea, in my opinion. I have always been a little unconvinced about the safety of the long highlines. Call me old fashioned, but I do like the concept of a backup. And with a highline, there is only one highline.
So if it breaks…..you don’t have a backup! I don’t like that.
Dean basically has an honorary PhD in highline rigging at this point, but we have seen again and again over the last twelve years of his constant rigging experiments, that the longer the lines, the greater the forces placed on them.
So I LOVE the idea of him walking a line with a BASE rig on. Finally, an actual backup! I think this is much much safer, and I like it very much.
Well, Sweetheart, I think the BASE rig back-up is fabulous….maybe now my hair won’t be totally white….patricia xx
Incredible story and photos. First baseline ever?
Yes, we are sure it is the first BASEline, in history. Though Dean has been working towards it, for a decade. Thank you for your approval, Patricia! When you have your mom’s support, you can do anything:) –so Dean is very lucky!

Nice one. I like your language in this one. it reminds me of this dinosaur Owen likes in his favorite show, the Land Before Time. She says things like…”that is very nice…it is, IT IS!” and “I do not like that, no, no, NO!”. I think her name is Littlefoot.
One more thing…WWW.AERIALISTMOVIE.COM!!!!!
hey steph, i’m just checking out your blog 4 the first time. about the BASElining, i’ve been doing it for years. nah, i’m just joking. i like that dean found a way to take something that’s already uber-cool and make it, not only safer, but imho, even cooler. you guys kick a$$!
