Hi Steph,
Just a note to say thanks for sharing your story in the Alpinist. Your adventures on the Diamond were incredible and very inspirational. I used your story to encourage a close friend that is facing some serious challenges. I thought you might be interested to know what I shared:
Climbing the Diamond
Steph Davis’s Story
It is another beautiful Colorado day — Longs Peak and Mt. Meeker are awesome! The Diamond on Longs was very visible this morning. I read a very inspiring article in one of my climbing magazines about a woman, Steph Davis, who solo climbed the Diamond last fall. A remarkable feat — no help, no ropes, no protection on a sheer mountain wall with only small cracks to get holds. She was on a quest to conquer her fears and to find solitude and healing in her life. I think that we are sometimes in situations like Steph was in climbing the Diamond. We have fears, but we must face them and go on with life with zest and an appreciation for each new day God has given to us. Sometimes it feels like we are solo climbing and that if we fall we will be devastated. But we are never solo climbing; our God and friends are with us. Please know that I am with you and so are your good friends. If we do fall, He will catch us. “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar like eagles: they will run and not be weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 29 -31
I am 59 and started high altitude hiking and some climbing three years ago. I am not even close to your level of climbing, but absolutely share your love for the beauty, challenge, friends and solitude.
Thanks Again and Keep on Climbing,
Carl Lee
Dear Carl,
It’s really inspiring to feel that my experiences could be of some use for others. Connection seems like the greatest thing we can find through climbing. Thank you, for sharing your thoughts–it really means a lot to me.
I hope things get easier for your friend. I see now that hard times will always lead to something better, though it can be incredibly difficult to hold that faith during the painful times. But they always do.
So we just need to hang in there, be the best we can, and trust that positive energy will always lead to good, both for ourselves and for others around us….
It helps more than anything to have good friends, reminding us, when it’s too hard to see for ourselves 🙂
xx Steph
