Transitions

Hey Steph!
Thanks a ton for your blog. I’m a huge fan!

I’m obsessed with hiking. When I’m not in school, I’m usually bumming around Moab or Cedar somewhere, just looking for the next trail. But it wasn’t until I started dating a girl–a major climber– last year that I started to get interested in climbing. We went to the gym in Provo a ton, but when our relationship ended, so did my climbing. I’ve been wanting to get back into it, but am a little nervous, not having a guru showing me the ropes. Any advice for a newbie just starting out? How does a beginner transition from gym to actual real outdoor climbing? Thanks a ton!

Hi Stu,
The best thing to do is just keep going to the gym, keep climbing, at first. This way you will meet some more people, and you’ll be able to make friends who have some more experience climbing outside. As soon as you do that, you can get outside with them. If you start off with sport climbing, the things you’ve learned in the gym will be very similar to the skills you’ll need outdoors. So don’t be intimidated.
Have fun! Steph
