Self-Supported Climbing Wall

Dear Steph,

I’m a big fan of you and I really love to read technical posts on your blog. I love climbing as much as find solutions to everyday problems: probably not everyone’s problem but you can understand me… how do I make a decent climbing wall fit in an empty room (that I have in my flat) ? I wouldn’t “hurt” the room walls and I wanted it to have some kind of modularity.

I’ve built a tube-joint supporting structure so that the actual plywood panel can be simply layed on it. I would optimize materials usage, plywood panels and tubes in particular, and maximize the usable surface; that said, the room constraints (mainly the ceiling) force the wall to be quite overhanging. In the open without height constraints should be better.

All without drilling a hole in the room.

I then remember the post on your blog about wall building. Hope you can share this project and maybe inspire someone else ideas.

PS: We met @ Cortina in Croda 2 years ago. That was a great time. Hope to have you back in Italy soon.

Ciao Ste,
This is truly amazing! All I can say is wow. This is so beautifully typical of Italian quality and craftsmanship, as well as a brilliant use of space. It’s a great wall, and thank you very much for sharing this information for others to use!

If you ever get bored and need to solve more building problems, come to Moab and you and Mario could have all kinds of problem-solving and wall-building fun together… 🙂

And yes, I really hope to be back to Cortina and Italy soon!
Steph

This set up would be really cool as a false floor if you paneled and carpeted the opposite side, and boxed in the other side of the tubular frame. Very cool and efficient, you have opened my eyes to several new ideas with this design.

I’ve been working on solving the same problem. Latest effort at http://cragwall.com

[…] Cheers, Kent Olmstead cragwall.com cragwall.tumblr.com (I’m a bit of a fringe/wannabe-more-enthusiast-than-real climber who had the pleasure of ratting around the edges of the emergence of sport climbing at Smith Rocks–Alan Watts is still a good friend, my brother put up Churning, I had the pleasure of building most of the Snowbird wall with Dale Bard for Jeff Lowe–I spent a decade at the beginning of the ‘industry’ in it, and now have spent more years away from it, but there’s still a passion to figure out how to bring a bit more of it home for those of us who don’t have either the will or way to get out a bit more…pathetic, maybe, but the truth.) P.S. Too funny that I would send you my email and then spend some more time at your blog and see: https://stephdavis.co/blog/self-supported-climbing-wall/ […]
