Resistance to Fear

Dear Steph,
I have being climbing for the last 20 years, I am from Italy and I am 36 now. I have 2 children, I work, train and climb in the week ends. I read your book which is quite interesting. I am interested in increasing my resistence to fear during climbing, can you suggest any method or reading ?

Thank you so much. Maybe I will meet you sooner or later in some climbing site around the world.
Marcella

Dear Marcella,
Thanks for writing to me!
One of my favorite books is called “Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind,” by Shunryu Suzuki. I think reading this book can help with a lot of things with life, and possibly also with anxiety in climbing.
So maybe you would like to check it out.

Also, for me, it helps to practice things that are scary. It seems like the first time at something is always the scariest time….like anything, it’s always easier each time afterwards. I think practice and repetition are in some ways the secret to everything.
I hope to meet you in Italy!
🙂 Steph

Check out also “Espresso Lessons from the Rock Warrior’s Way” by Arno Ilgner (http://warriorsway.com/espresso-lessons/) It’s all about how we can take calculated risks and use our own psychology to determine what is a resonable risk for us versus just plain stupid!
